The 1940 Census Indexing

The big news in the genealogy community has been the release of the 1940 Census. It's been two days since the first images for the 1940 census were released. From what I have read the servers that had the images for the first 5 states for NARA at Archives.com became overloaded by the 22.5 million hits in the first 3 hours. I don't think anyone anticipated the demand to see those records. It looks like the IT crew worked hard overnight and had things stabilized on Tuesday.

A massive army of volunteers began indexing the 1940 census on the Family Search website on Monday. I applaud all those that will be taking time to help index in this massive project. I will look forward to digging into these records once indexing is complete. If you are interested in helping out the indexing project go to the Family Search website for details or at this link. Instructions are available and you can do a test sample before you dig right in.
